5 Things  You Should Know About Self Publishing

January 24, 2019

People inbox me every other day about self publishing their book. Some of the questions are down right funny, crazy, or just takes a little bit of guidance.

Listen, there was a time when I struggled between self publishing and traditional. It was a hard decision that shaped my entire career as an author.

Today I'm spilling the tea and dropping some gems on 5 Things You Should Know About Self Publishing

1️⃣ You are responsible for the distribution, editing, marketing and design of your book.

2️⃣ You will need to budget for the expense of publishing, editing, marketing and graphic design of your book for up to $1500 or more.

3️⃣ You should plan a six month marketing strategy to promote your book before publication.

4️⃣ You are the author, publicist, promoter, and social media specialists when it comes to having roles.

5️⃣ Your book may be available to online retailers, not available to brick and mortar stores like B & N

How To Write The Book You Want To Read

January 31, 2019

Here are 5 tips to help you WRITE the book YOU want to read :

1️⃣ Know Thy Self : You can admire and respect great literary writers like Toni Morrison or James Patterson. Do you know yourself? Being true to who you are as a writer will show up in your work, speech, and interactions with potential readers. People buy into the fantasy. They invest in the human connection. You don't have to be perfect. Be your wild, fun, and genuine self on and off the page.

2️⃣ Write about what matters MOST to you : Just because sci-fi and fantasy are lucrative genres doesn't mean you should right about it. If you are passionate about childhood obesity, politics, religion, true love, or finding happiness, write about it. When you write what you care about, you allow your more opportunities to find you.

3️⃣ Read your genre : I enjoy romance novels, women's fiction and young adult. I naturally gravitate towards the books that intrigue me as a reader and spark my imagination as a writer. Study your genre and write your story.

4️⃣ Tell your story unedited : Have you overcome abuse, addiction, trauma? People want to know how you made it to where you are today. Don't just give people a fictional account of a characters story. Let ppl know that this is something I experienced and I want to share it with the world as an author.

5️⃣ Trust your instincts : I started writing in a diary at 8 yrs old. I entered writing contest in high school. I hung out at the library for fun. Every road I traveled on, led me back to writing or reading. If you have a instinct to write follow it. "If there is a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, you must be the one to write it."-Toni Morrison
